USDA is facing new calls to make substantive changes to its programs as the Trump administration’s promise to Make America Healthy Again is largely leaving agriculture policy untouched.
A group of 115 farmers and advocacy groups is pushing USDA to incorporate MAHA-inspired changes that they say will better align the department with the Robert F. Kennedy Jr.-led coalition at the core of President Donald Trump’s voter base.
They outlined their demands in a letter — obtained exclusively by POLITICO — sent to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Friday.
“We urge USDA to turn the MAHA vision into tangible results,” wrote the group spearheaded by Farm Action, United We Eat and Moms Across America. They are also petitioning USDA to focus on the agenda they’ve laid out.
The ask comes as MAHA leaders and activists are threatening to put Republican lawmakers who oppose their agenda on a “hit list” ahead of the 2026 midterms, where they could play a crucial role in swing districts where their support helped deliver Trump a victory in 2024.
“If they really want to listen to MAHA leaders and to independent family farms, these are actions they can take to show that they’re listening to us and to deliver on MAHA promises,” said Angela Huffman, president of Farm Action, which bills itself as a nonpartisan coalition that opposes corporate control of the food system.
