SUMMARY:Food Not Feed Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Food Not Feed Summit aims to establish an agenda of shifting federal farm programs toward fiber-rich foods and regeneratively raised livestock and poultry within a system that’s fair and equitable from seed to fork.\nAbout the Food Not Feed Summit\nRegister now to join us via livestream on February 7. \nAmerica’s farms have long been the heart of our nation. Our farmers know how to seed\, cultivate\, grow\, raise\, and harvest enough food for all of us to lead happy\, healthy lives\, in a way that safeguards our environment and secures a bright future for our children. \nUnfortunately\, multinational corporations spend millions lobbying for incentives that push farmers to grow feed for livestock all over the world\, instead of producing the nutritious food that’s better for farmers to grow and consumers to eat. This leaves too many of us hungry\, sick\, and without access to the fruits and vegetables that our government recommends. \nAnd that’s not all: this approach also drives farmers from their land\, abuses animals\, destroys our water\, soil\, and air\, and even threatens America’s national security through a reckless trade imbalance. All the while\, multinational corporations reap windfall profits. \nThat’s why a growing coalition of farmers\, health\, faith\, environment\, labor\, and animal advocates is hosting a summit in Washington to demonstrate the need and momentum to fundamentally change America’s agriculture policies. In February\, ahead of the 2023 Farm Bill reauthorization\, this coalition will advocate a policy shift to towards Food\, Not Feed\, to revitalize America’s heartland and put profits back in the pockets of our family farmers. \nRegister now to join us via livestream on February 7.

SUMMARY:Making the Grade? A Midterm Review of the Biden Administration's Commitment to Food System Competition
DESCRIPTION:In July of 2021\, President Biden issued a sweeping executive order that directed multiple federal agencies to revive antitrust enforcement and promote competition throughout the U.S. economy. \nThe order dispatched the USDA\, the FTC\, and the DOJ to address monopoly power in the food and agriculture system. Successful completion of these objectives has the potential to tip the balance of power toward farmers\, ranchers\, and the American people. \nNow\, nearly a year later\, what progress has been made?  \nOn June 14th\, join other advocates\, policymakers\, and members of the press either virtually or at the Capitol Hill Hilton in Washington\, D.C. as Farm Action and the Open Markets Institute release our Midterm Review of the Biden Administration’s Commitment to Food System Competition — a report card on the Biden administration’s trustbusting efforts in food and agriculture. \nTo spotlight the importance and urgency of competition reform\, the event will feature a video of first-person accounts from producers and small business owners spanning the country and the food supply chain\, testifying to the on-the-ground impacts of food system concentration. Finally\, a panel of farmers\, ranchers\, and food system experts will discuss the directives from the executive order most urgently in need of fulfillment and the consequences of continued inaction. Speakers will be announced soon.  \nRSVP here for either the in-person or the virtual event. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:American Bar Association Antitrust Section Spring Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Farm Action Co-founder and Vice President Angela Huffman will be speaking on a panel called “Is Competition in Agriculture Suffering a Drought?” \nTen years after DOJ and USDA hosted a series of workshops to explore and promote “free and fair competition” in agriculture\, the Biden Administration and Congress have expressed concern that a lack of competition in that sector still persists. Join this session for views from the government\, farmers\, and agribusiness on what’s changed\, what hasn’t\, and what changes future enforcement might bring.

SUMMARY:2022 OEFFA Conference
DESCRIPTION:Farm Action’s Angela Huffman and Sarah Carden will present\, “Town Hall to Farm Bill: Dismantling Big Ag’s Fragile System Propped up by Myths and Hidden Costs.”\n\nTime and time again\, farmers\, communities\, and advocates have tried to shift government support away from industrial agriculture and toward a more resilient and equitable system\, and have failed because Big Ag controls the narrative surrounding the agricultural policy debate. In this interactive workshop we will offer tools\, planning\, and processes to: 1) Call out the hidden costs of industrial agriculture\, 2) Dismantle industrial agriculture’s deceptive myths\, and 3) Transform the narratives anywhere from town hall meetings to 2023 Farm Bill debates.

SUMMARY:2021 Farm Action Virtual Fly-In: A New Day Dawns for a Fair Farm Bill
DESCRIPTION:Family Farm Action has a vision for a #FairFarmBill\, and we’re pumped to share it with Congress and the Biden Administration at our virtual fly-in! From November 1 – 3\, farmers\, ranchers\, and rural advocates will head (virtually) to D.C.  We’ll educate and energize decision-makers in the House\, Senate\, USDA\, and other agencies\, providing the facts they need to create a fair farm bill. \nWhy now? We are taking on Big Ag — the most powerful corporations\, boardrooms\, and lobbyists in Washington D.C. We can’t let corporate interests land us with yet another farm bill that funnels excessive wealth into their pockets — at the expense of everybody else. We’re not waiting a minute longer: we are taking the fight to them\, right in our U.S. Capitol! \nFollow along on our event page and on social media! We’re on Twitter @FarmActionUS and on Facebook at Family Farm Action. We hope you’ll join our movement! \n

SUMMARY:Join Us at Yale's Big Ag & Antitrust Conference
DESCRIPTION:Family Farm Action Alliance’s Emily Miller has been invited to present a new paper\, written in collaboration with Dr. Mary Hendrickson and Dr. Philip Howard\, at Yale’s upcoming virtual conference\, “Big Ag & Antitrust: Competition Policy for a Sustainable and Humane Food System.” The conference will be held on Saturday\, January 16\, 2021 and is free and open to the public. \nTitled\, The Missouri School: Examining Power in the Agrifood System to Suggest Alternatives\, the new paper argues that the root of the vulnerability we see in today’s concentrated agrifood supply chain is unequal power relationships between people\, communities\, and the environment. We examine the “modes of power” in these relationships to expose the nature of power accumulation by corporate actors and unique points of intervention for agrifood system reform. \nFrom academics\, enforcers\, policymakers\, practitioners\, journalists\, and beyond\, Yale’s virtual conference is a place to convene and share ideas for how to collaboratively address concentration in agriculture. \nThe aim of this conference is to explore the role of antitrust and competition policy in creating America’s food system and its potential for improving it; with the hope that the papers presented here will help spark future research\, heightened enforcement attention\, and new ideas for policy reforms toward achieving more competitive\, sustainable\, and humane agriculture markets. \nWatch our session above and watch the full conference here. Find all of the research papers presented at the conference here.

SUMMARY:Report Briefing: "The Food System: Concentration and Its Impacts" Featuring Dr. Mary Hendrickson With Remarks From Sen. Cory Booker
DESCRIPTION:On November 19th from 12:00-1:00 PM EST\, Family Farm Action Alliance launched a special report\, “The Food System: Concentration and Its Impacts\,” at a virtual event in partnership with Open Markets Institute. This report outlines the state of concentration in the agrifood system\, and what happens when a few hands control the way billions of consumers\, farmers\, and farmworkers work and eat. \nWritten by leading food systems expert Dr. Mary Hendrickson and her team\, this paper is founded on the premise that monopolistic control is no longer about accumulating capital or profits\, but rather amassing and protecting power. Our paper launch event will feature remarks by Senator Cory Booker and a discussion with Dr. Hendrickson. \nPlease reach out to us at info@farmaction.us with any questions.
